PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT FROM
THE IDAHO PANHANDLE NATIONAL FOREST

During the winter season, snowmobile use in the designated woodland caribou recovery area within the Idaho Panhandle National Forests will be limited to "on trail" travel on designated routes and within designated "open areas" only for off-trail travel. Over-snow travel outside these specific trails and areas is enjoined (prohibited by legal action) pursuant to a November 7, 2006 U.S. District Court ruling by Judge Robert H. Whaley.
The court's ruling applies only to National Forest System lands in northern Idaho, and excludes lands administered by the State of Idaho and privately owned lands. This decision balances the Forest Service's responsibilities for protection of caribou under the Endangered Species Act while allowing responsible motorized winter recreation on the Priest Lake, Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry Ranger Districts.
Please refer to the snowmobile trail map (5.8mb pdf) for approved designated routes and open areas. Large scale reference maps also will be available for viewing at Idaho Panhandle National Forest business offices by mid-December. A smaller version of the snowmobile trails and areas map will be available at Forest Service offices and local snowmobile dealerships as soon as received from the printer.

The tables below provide condition reports for both snowmobile and Nordic groomed trails. A Priest Lake snowmobile trail map is also included beneath the snowmobile trails table. For easy reference, the map is color coded to the respective snowmobiling trail areas cited in the table. The snowmobile trail map depicted on this page is a general representation of the Priest Lake Groomed Snowmobile Trail System and should not be used for navigation purposes. Printed maps suitable for navigation are available from numerous local merchants.
