Brown’s
Buffalo Ranch
Oh,where
-- oh, where do the buffalo roam? Well, in the Priest Lake area a
herd roams the gentle rolling hills of Brown's Buffalo Ranch. Gene
and Vicki Brown began their buffalo herd in 1990 with four animals.
The herd has grown steadily over the years to its present size of
over 100 animals. With the backdrop of the beautiful pasture lands
in the Priest River valley, the herd reminds one of what it may have
been like two centuries ago when this magnificent animal had the
freedom to roam the plains of America.
Visitors are invited to tour the ranch by appointment only. Please call
(208) 448-2320 at least 24 hours prior to the desired visitation date/time.
Tour times are normally available Mon-Fri mornings. In addition to managing
the herd, Brown's Buffalo Ranch also operates a sales facility where you
may purchase choice buffalo meat.
Brown's Buffalo Ranch is located approximately 6 miles north of the city
of Priest River. To reach the ranch, travel south from Coolin on East River
Road / Peninsula Road for 16.6 miles. The ranch is situated on the east
side of Peninsula Road. A large "Brown's Buffalo" sign is affixed
to the south side of the barn. This route will take you past Whitetail
Butte (6.3 miles from Coolin) and the Priest
River Experimental Forest / Gisborne Mountain (9.1 miles from Coolin).
Both are worthy of a visit as time allows.
If you prefer an all blacktop route, travel south on ID State Route 57
towards Priest River. Approximately 1/2 mile south of Mile Post 4, turn
left onto Peninsula Road and proceed 2 1/2 miles to the Brown's ranch. |
